The crack of my sister’s hand across my face echoed through LAX Terminal 3 like a gunshot. For a heartbeat, the entire terminal froze. A man mid-sip of his Starbucks stared. A mother herding two toddlers stopped dead. A TSA agent paused with a boarding pass in hand. Two hundred people — maybe more — turned toward us at once.
My cheek burned. My ears rang. I stood there stunned, one hand hovering uselessly near my face, my carry-on still hanging from my shoulder. Jessica stood in front of me, chest heaving, eyes blazing with an anger that felt less spontaneous and more rehearsed.
“That’s for ruining my life!” she screamed, loud enough to carry past the gate.
I tried to speak. Nothing came out.
My parents rushed over from the coffee stand, but they didn’t check on me. They didn’t ask if I was okay. My mother grabbed Jessica’s shoulders.
“Honey, what happened?”
My father turned to me, his face already hardened into that familiar look of disappointment.
“Alex, what did you do?”
“I didn’t—”
“She’s crying,” Mom cut in, pulling Jessica into a hug. “Why do you always start drama?”
Jessica sobbed convincingly. “He’s been so mean to me all week. He’s trying to ruin this trip.”
I hadn’t said a word about the trip. I barely spoke to Jessica at all. But the truth never mattered when it came to her.
Phones were out now. Recording lights blinked. My hands began to shake.
“Apologize,” Dad said quietly — the voice he used when he was furious but wanted to keep it contained.
“I didn’t do anything.”
“Apologize. Now.”
Jessica wiped her eyes and glared at me. “Say it so everyone can hear.”
Two hundred strangers watched as I swallowed my pride.
“I’m sorry, Jessica.”
She crossed her arms. “You’re sitting away from us on the plane.”
Mom nodded instantly. “That’s probably best. You need to think about your behavior.”
My behavior.
As they walked away, Jessica glanced back and gave me a tiny smile — quick, smug, victorious. She’d planned it. And they’d believed her, like always.
What none of them knew was simple:
I paid for the entire trip.
